Edward “Sonny” Calvin Hooper, Jr., a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on January 22, 2025, at the age of 83.

Born on July 5, 1941, Sonny’s life was a testament to love, laughter, and the importance of family.

For 63 wonderful years, Sonny shared a deep and abiding love with his wife. Together, they raised four remarkable children—two boys and two girls—instilling in them the values of hard work, tradition, and compassion. His expansive heart was enriched further by a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren who brought immense joy to his life, ensuring that his legacy continues to flourish through generations.

Family gatherings were a source of happiness for Sonny; he thrived in the company of loved ones, often bringing laughter and warmth to these cherished moments. Known for his quick wit and sense of humor, he had a remarkable ability to light up any room and lift the spirits of those around him. He selflessly devoted more than 34 years to coaching Junior Pro Football, where he not only taught the game but also became a mentor, touching the lives of countless young athletes. To his players, his family, his children’s friends and many more, he was more than just a coach—he was a guiding light who inspired discipline, teamwork, and perseverance, leaving an indelible mark on their lives.

Sonny was also proud to be a member of the Dickson County Bass Club, sharing his passion for fishing with friends who appreciated the tranquility and joy of the great outdoors. His work ethic was admirable; he embarked on his career as a trucker with AirGas Co, and ultimately working in sales before his eventual retirement. His dedication and commitment were not only recognized by his peers but also by the many lives he touched through his work. In his later years, Sonny embarked on an exciting new chapter after retirement. He proudly co-founded Hooper Trucking with his eldest son, fondly known as “Big Ed.” This venture allowed him to share his passion for hard work with his family, teaching valuable lessons about perseverance and dedication that will be passed down through generations.

Faith played a significant role in Sonny’s life as he was a devoted member of Browns Chapel Church of Christ, where he nurtured his spiritual growth and formed enduring connections within his community. His presence will be dearly missed not just within the walls of this church but in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him.

As we remember Edward “Sonny” Calvin Hooper, Jr., we celebrate a life well-lived—a life characterized by love, dedication, and the invaluable lessons he imparted to his family and community.
