Dr. Charles Edward Blackburn, a beloved minister and humanitarian, passed away on April 23, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of compassion and selflessness that touched the lives of many.
Born on July 21, 1932, Ed devoted more than four decades of his life to ministry, spreading love and kindness to all he encountered. His unwavering dedication to aiding the less fortunate and actively engaging with the community marked him as a true servant leader.
Ed pursued his education at Martin Methodist College in Pulaski and Athens State University in Alabama for his undergraduate studies. He furthered his theological pursuits at Duke University and Scarritt in Nashville, obtaining his Masters in Evangelism. His journey of learning culminated in a doctorate in pastoral counseling from Vanderbilt.
A native of Maury County, he began his ministry at Chestnut Grove in Giles County and later served the Cornersville charge in Marshall County. He served Kern Memorial in Nashville, Savannah First, Hendersonville First, and Ashland City. After four years in Crievewood in Nashville, he was appointed to Lebanon First, where he served five years. He also served Arlington Methodist in Nashville before being assigned to Dickson in 1989.
His service extended to organizational roles such as Nashville district director of missions and church extension, where he spearheaded initiatives like the establishment of South End Church and Hickory Bend United Methodist Church. He also held leadership positions in the Conference Council of the Tennessee Conference and chaired the Board of Camps and Assemblies during the development of Cedar Crest Camp.
Beyond his ministry work, Ed had published several books on poetry and even ventured into the world of children’s literature with a published children’s book that surely brought joy and imagination to young readers. His creative spirit extended to his hobbies such as field point hunting and golf, where he found solace and connection with nature.
One of Ed’s greatest contributions was his involvement with Habitat for Humanity in Dickson. Through his philanthropic efforts, he helped provide safe and affordable housing for those in need, embodying the values of generosity and empathy.
Dr. C. Edward Blackburn will be remembered not only for his ministerial accomplishments but also for the kindness he showed to all and the positive impact he made on countless lives. His spirit of giving and dedication to serving others will continue to be a guiding light for generations to come.
Visitation: Saturday, April 27, 2024 from 4 – 7 PM at Spann Funeral Home, and Sunday, April 28, 2024 from 1:00 PM – until time of services at Dickson First United Methodist Church. Funeral Service: beginning at 3:00 PM at Dickson First United Methodist Church with Dr. Ed White officiating. Interment: will follow at Dickson County Memorial Gardens
