Dr. Jere Bass, 96, passed away at his home with family on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, after a years-long struggle with dementia.
Jere was born in Ridgely, TN in March 1928, the fourth of six children, and was raised in Trenton, TN. After graduating from Spring Hill High School in the Central community near Trenton, he attended Freed-Hardeman College (now University) for two years, before completing his degree at Abilene Christian College (now University).
He began his career teaching high school English and French in Midland, TX before being drafted into the U. S. Army where he was assigned to a dental clinic at Fort Sill, OK. It was through that experience that he was inspired to pursue a career in dentistry, completing requirements at U. T. Dental School in Memphis on the GI bill.
Jere moved to Dickson in 1957 to open his dental practice, where he served the community until his retirement in 1998. In 1959 he married Anne Fussell, of Dickson, his loving wife for 65 years. During those years he served as a deacon, and later, an elder of Walnut Street Church of Christ. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Bank of Dickson for 26 years. For family members he will most be remembered as a loving husband, father, and grandfather with a gentle nature and a charming sense of humor.
After his retirement, Jere was able to pursue various hobbies. He enjoyed working in the yard and meeting with the Gardening Partners in various projects, sharing flowers and plants, and other activities. He was taught piano by his sister, Sarah Joe, as a child and he enjoyed a life-long love of playing the piano until just a few weeks before his passing.
Jere was preceded in death by his parents, Gertrude Baugus Bass and Bonnie L. Bass, and by his siblings, Sarah Joe Wharey, Thomas Bass, Frank Bass, Robert Bass, and James Bass.
He is survived by his wife, Anne Bass; his daughter Susan Johnson, his son John Bass, and grandchildren Will Johnson, Chris Johnson, Laura Bass, and Allen Bass.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 5th, at Noon, at Taylor Funeral Home in Dickson. Visitation will be Tuesday evening June 4th from 4:00 to 7:00 and Wednesday from 10:30 – 11:45. https://taylorsince1909.com
