Illa Mae Hassell Beard, age 86, of Dickson, TN passed away peacefully on February 14, 2025, at the Alive Hospice Residence in Nashville, TN.

Mae was born in Vanleer, TN in the Stoney Point community to the late Vernie Allen and Ruthie Agnes Averitte Hassell.

She was the widow of the late Russell Beard. During her working years Mae loved being in the middle of food service, especially as a waitress. She loved to cook, and she loved to serve her friends and family and enjoy them eating good food. One of Mae’s many cooking talents was that she made the best fried pies and delivered them to friends on many, many occasions.

Mae loved spending time at the VFW on so many events there. There was always a fundraiser she was willing to be involved in. In years past, she attended the West Nashville Moose Lodge. Mae was of the Baptist faith.

She was the type of person that if you gave her a task to do…it was accomplished. Mae was loved by many, and it was just understood that when she told you something you could “set your watch by it”. One never knew where you stood with Mae Beard. Mae loved her family and never forgot where she came from and would stand by them through thick and thin. If you had Mae as a friend, you had a loyal friend.

She was preceded in death by her son, Walter Edward Powell, Jr., her brothers, J. V. Hassell, Bobby Hassell, Walter T. Hassell, Chuck Hassell and a sister Carlene Hassell.

Mae (AKA as Granny) is survived by her daughter, Melinda Wright and her husband Ronald, her sons, Douglas England and Wayne Powell and his wife Nita Kay, her four grandchildren, Johanna Powell (Jacob Matthews), Rhonda Booker (Jerry), Brenda Powell and Amy Longtin, her four great-grandchildren, Charleen Schmidt, Charlie Ortiz Powell, Zach Longtin and Mason Booker, her great- great-grandchildren, Chandler Schmidt and Charlotte Schmidt.

Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday afternoon, February 18, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. from the chapel of the Taylor Funeral Home. A VFW Ladies Auxiliary will have a service prior to services on Tuesday. Visitation will be on Tuesday beginning at 11:00 a.m. until time of service.
