Betty Jo Curtis Elliott, age 91 of Charlotte, TN passed away on Thursday, November 14, 2024.
Mrs. Elliott was born on January 19, 1933 in Cuba Landing, TN. She was a daughter of the late Ura Lee Curtis and the late Bess Merideth Curtis.
The Curtis family lived in Humphreys County in the McEwen and Buffalo communities before moving to Charlotte, TN in 1937. She attended Charlotte Elementary School and Charlotte High School. In 1954, she joined in marriage to Robert “Bob” Lee Elliott. Mr. Elliott was a U.S. Army Veteran who served during the Korean War. Betty graduated from Austin Peay State College in 1955. She was the state president of the Home Economics Association and represented her home state at the national convention in San Francisco. She taught school for 2 years in Whitehaven, TN while Bob was in Pharmacy School in Memphis, TN.
In 1957, they moved back to Charlotte, where Bob opened Charlotte Drug Company on the town square. Betty had a career as an educator for over 27 years. Most of her tenure was at Charlotte Elementary School teaching second grade. From her teenage years, Betty was a faithful member of the Water Street Church of Christ. She was an avid reader, often engaged in finishing a book each week, and participating in a book club and study club.
Like many of the Elliotts, Betty was very artistic, she created art pieces of stained glass and paintings. She was an excellent seamstress, talented enough to create anything from casual clothing to her own wedding dress. Betty was known for her ability to cook. For many years she volunteered to assist in preparing dinners for the Meals on Wheel program, several to be delivered by her husband, Bob.
Betty was a gentle, kind and sweet lady, she was caring and thoughtful. She loved mailing cards for all occasions, it was truly a ministry from her heart. Adored by her children, likewise her children proud to belong to Betty.
In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Bob in 2010. She was also preceded by her brother, Ralph Curtis and her sister, Dorris Hinson.
Mrs. Elliott is survived by her children, Jo Allyson Fowlkes (Bill), Roberth Lee Elliott II (Mary-Ann), Dana Merideth Elliott, and David Curtis Elliott (Kelly); grandchildren, Nathan Thomas Elliott (Kimberly), Elizabeth Ann Elliott, Samuel Welch Elliott (Emma), Megan Souder, January Nicole Price (Steve), and Alexander Miller (Olivia). Also surviving are numerous great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held on Monday November 18, 2024 at 2 PM from the Chapel of Taylor Funeral Home with Bro. Thomas Southerland officiating. Place of rest will be in the Dickson County Memorial Gardens. The visitation will be held on Monday from 12 noon until the time of service. https://taylorsince1909.com
